There are three types of battery used for hybrid vehicles: NCM, LFP and Ni-MH, of which the first two is Lithium-ion battery. NCM has a cycle life of 1000 times, LFP is about 2000 times. These two batteries used at Hybrid car can work about 10 years with a 200k mileage. Though some of the cell is broken, the replacement cost, hundreds of Yuan, is acceptable. It is impossible of changing the whole battery system during lifetime. Toyota’s hybrid use Ni-MH battery with a cycle life of 500 times. Electric vehicle’s battery lifespan, like long lifetime Lead-acid cell, is around 1.5-2 years. LFP battery theoretical service life is 7-8 years. And NCM lifetime is 5-20 years, with an average of 8 years. However the above value is only expected data. With today’s level of technology, the lifetime of electric vehicle battery is about 3-5 years. Below the 80% remaining energy capacity, EV endurance mileage will decline clearly. If the remaining capacity is under 70%, battery replacement is needed.
According to the statistic for Tesla that the EV battery energy capacity fades around 1% per 10k miles. This means that if the battery energy capacity will degrade to 70% in 30k miles, there is a need for battery replacement. Frequent using of fast-charging even speeds up battery fade. Furthermore, Most EV car manufactures including Tesla, loss of battery energy or power is not covered under the battery limited warranty. Above all, drivers should give great attention to the battery lifespan.
